A former plastics engineer, transformed his Moscow municipal Committee for Science & Technology into a commercial enterprise; gained access to lucrative government contracts, real estate and capital. His empire, AFK Sistema ("the System"), now consists of some 200 companies with holdings ranging from microchips to toy stores. Most valuable is 52.8stake in MTS, Russia's largest cellular carrier. In January 2005 Yevtushenkov resigned as chairman of the board and became chief executive in preparation for its listing a month later on London Stock Exchange. In February of this year, Yevtushenkov switched roles again, giving up the CEO title and resuming that of chairman.
